ERSE launches simulator, advocating a lower energy bill
2018-07-12
Electricity, natural gas, or both
Ever since the liberalization of the electricity and
natural gas markets in 2006, consumers have been free to choose their energy supplier
which means there are several suppliers competing with each other at market
prices. As the entity responsible for regulating the electricity and natural
gas sectors in Portugal, ERSE (Energy Services Regulatory Authority) launched an
energy price simulator, that
presents more than 250 rates from 21 traders in electricity and 8 traders in
natural gas. This allows both consumers on the regulated market and the ones
already in the liberalized market to be informed of more beneficial commercial
offers. Among other features, this user friendly simulator enables
consumers to compare the amount payable when they decide to hire electricity
and natural gas jointly or separately, lets them use the prices of current
contracts to check if there are possible savings by changing the energy
provider and graphically identifies the weight of the components of an energy
bill, e.g.: the network access tariffs, the energy component or the applicable taxes.
All information related to commercial
offers has also been made easily available to third parties such as companies,
consumers, consumer protection associations, etc.. in a transparent database
format. This efficient and responsive simulator has registered more than 36 thousand users and almost 475 thousand
simulations on the 1st month alone.
57% of those users found lower prices than their current contract, and of
these, 85% expressed the intention to exchange their energy provider. 4% of the
users are originally from other countries. The ultimate challenge: allowing consumers to
have lower electricity and natural gas bills while contributing to consumer
awareness in all energy related matters. Powered by ViaTecla, the simulator can be checked here.
